As of February 2021, there are approximately 10.1 million people who are unemployed. This is about twice as high as the same time last year, pre-COVID. Needless to say, people are looking for new and innovative ways to bring income into their households.

People are looking for new and innovative ways to bring income into their households.

If you read that and said, “Yep, me too,” this article is for you!
Being out of work is definitely not a stroke of luck. However, we are lucky in that it’s 2021, and technology has made it easier than ever to make money in non-traditional ways, such as apps.
Intrigued? Keep on scrolling for the best apps for side hustles.
Dosh
First of all, let’s talk about the apps that will give you cash back without you having to do anything but make a purchase that you’d regularly make.
Dosh is one of the great apps for side hustles because you don’t really have to “hustle,” per se. It partners with over 10,000 popular retailers that you probably already use, such as Sam’s Club, Walmart, and Pizza Hut.
It’s also one of the highest-rated cashback apps because it’s automatic. You’re not required to use discount codes or to track receipts – you connect your debit card, and the app scans your transactions to give you cashback automatically.
Qmee
Although the name might send off some digital red flags, never fear – Qmee is a great way to make some passive income. Not only is it an app, but it’s also a web browser extension that you can use while you’re online on a laptop or desktop.
Basically, you get paid for having opinions on products and services. Luckily, opinions are like elbows – everybody has them, so why not get paid for sharing them?
The mobile app is a great way to make money on your phone. You earn cash rewards for taking surveys and engaging with brands that you purchase. The web browser extension works in the same way – it tracks your spending and asks you to take surveys and leave your reviews on products that you frequently buy for cashback rewards.
Mercari, Poshmark – Turn Your “Stuff” Into Side Hustles
Take a look around your home – it probably doesn’t take long to realize that you have way too much stuff. We all do. So, why not turn all of that stuff into cash?
As far as side hustles go, the online selling apps are at their peak right now. eBay used to be the only option, and it’s still there. However, for a faster, more expedited selling platform, try apps like Mercari and Poshmark.
Both of these apps started with sellers unloading their clothes (and a lot of name-brand items) for profit. Now, they’ve both expanded their reach – Poshmark sells clothing for men, women, kids, and pets. Designer handbags and other items are also popular so, if you’ve got a closet full of clothes, Poshmark is a great way to make money on your phone.
On the flip side, Mercari has turned into more of an Amazon-like selling platform. Like Poshmark, they started out as a clothing-heavy resale site. Now, you can find almost anything on there – from video games to toys to electronics.
As far as the fees charged by both platforms, Mercari wins this battle, but only by a few dollars. Still, every dollar counts! In regards to shipping, Poshmark wins with their flat shipping fees.
Either way, both apps are a great way to get rid of stuff you don’t want/need. If you’re going to list on both, however, make sure you delete listings as they sell so you don’t have to cancel orders on a buyer.

DoorDash
Maybe you’re looking for some side hustle ideas, but you still want to get out of the house for work. No problem – become a DoorDasher!
Food delivery services have soared in popularity since the pandemic started, and DoorDash is one of these success stories. The app was launched by takeout-loving college students in 2013. Within the last year, DoorDash became so profitable that it joined the New York Stock Exchange in December of 2020 and closed at the end of its first day at $189.51.
It’s easy to join and start working – once your account is set up, you can sign up for a shift and start delivering. If a buyer tips you, you keep 100% of it. The app pays you based on other factors such as distance driven.
And if you’re thinking, “But I want side hustles that don’t ‘deal’ with human interaction,” you’re in luck. The majority of DoorDash orders are contactless and will likely remain that way for the foreseeable future.
Merchandiser App
This is a fantastic app for the go-getter and, just like DoorDash, it’ll get you out of the house.
Merchandiser (technically, it’s Merchandiser by Survey.com) is an app that connects you with local businesses that need short-term work done. And when we say “short-term,” we mean it – most of the projects can take anywhere from 15 minutes to five hours.
You choose which projects you want to complete and when you want to work. The payout for projects is listed; however, you do have to apply for them, so don’t get too excited until it’s assigned to you.
You will need a few things for this job, including reliable transportation and a camera on your phone. Existing users have said that a lot of the jobs that require travel are the last to be picked, so expect to drive somewhere. Also, their audit department is meticulous and wants photos to prove that you completed the job.
The main takeaway from users who earn passive income through Merchandiser seems to be this – follow instructions. Missing one small step can result in you not getting paid for the job.
Lyft
Since we’re still on the theme of “best side hustles that will get you out of the house,” let’s take a look at another popular app – Lyft.
Rideshare apps like Lyft have gained popularity over the last few years because of their convenience to travelers. In fact, in some cities, there are more Lyft drivers than taxi cabs. Lyft is currently the second-largest ridesharing app and is available in over 300 cities across the country.
Your earnings are determined by:
* the number of rides you choose to accept
* distance traveled
* time taken to complete rides
Peak hours, better known as “surge pricing,” are also a great way to earn even more money if you choose to drive for Lyft. Big events such as concerts, sporting events, etc., can drive up the rates because of the high demand for rides, which adds up to more money in your pocket.
And, just like DoorDash, Lyft gives drivers 100% of tips left by customers.
Shopkick
You’re going to shop anyways, so why not get paid for it?
Shopkick is a location-based app where you can earn “kicks,” as they’re called, for shopping at your favorite stores, checking in there, and making purchases. The list of stores varies from one day to the next; however, big-box stores like Target, Best Buy, and TJ Maxx have been featured often.
Once you’ve earned enough kicks, you can redeem them for restaurant vouchers, movie tickets, gift cards, and more.
You can earn kicks by:
* scanning barcodes on selected items
* walking into a store
* making online purchases
* submitting receipts
* watching videos
So, whether you’re shopping in-person or online, Shopkick is one of the better apps for side hustles.
Instacart
Personal grocery shoppers, much like food delivery, have seen a significant increase in demand with the pandemic over the last year. Instacart was around before that, but its popularity has exploded in the last 12 months.
If you enjoy grocery shopping, why not do it for other people and make some cash at the same time?
Instacart allows you to create your own hours by grocery shopping for other people. And, if you were wondering, delivery doesn’t have to be part of the deal. If you’re without a reliable form of transportation or not physically able to lift, you can moonlight as an in-store shopper, where you shop for others but don’t deliver.
Long Pin
You can also be a full-service shopper, which is the more popular of the two options. Not only will you grocery shop for other people, but you’ll also deliver straight to their door.
And guess what? They offer benefits, even for part-time employees! This is a rarity nowadays and another great reason to start grocery shopping for other people in your spare time.
Sweatcoin
Are you an active person? Do you run daily or walk your dog? Why not turn those activities you enjoy into side hustles?
Sweatcoin is an activity-based app that pays you in “sweatcoins.” When you’ve amassed enough sweatcoins, you can use the coins to pay for things like fitness training, health gadgets, restaurant vouchers, and more.
It counts your steps as long as you keep it running in the background and does not share your information with anybody. If you’ve got a smartwatch, you can hook the app up to it as well.
Coinbase
By now, you’ve no doubt heard about the phenomenon that is cryptocurrency. And, like most people, you’re probably confused and/or intimidated by the concept. If that’s the case, Coinbase is a great jumping-off point for your investment into the crypto world.
Coinbase is a user-friendly app that allows you to buy and sell cryptocurrency, as well as store the crypto that you own. They’re also one of the leading brands for converting your digital currency into something tangible. Cryptocurrency has become one of the most popular side hustles of the last decade.
The app features a wide range of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, and other coins. When you sign up, you can either link a bank account or a debit card to start buying and selling.
Keep in mind, however, that linking a debit card reduces your spending power to $3,000 while linking your bank account increases it to $25,000. So, depending on how much you want to buy or sell (or both), you’ll need to make the decision that’s best for you and your finances.
Coinbase has over 35 million users across 10 countries and is one of the top-trusted crypto platforms. Cryptocurrency is just like any other investment, so make sure you know what you’re getting into beforehand.
Gift Card Granny
Gift cards have been a popular option for over two decades now and, since the global pandemic, have become an even more accessible method of gift-giving.
When you download the Gift Card Granny app, you’ll earn rewards every time you buy or sell a gift card. One of the easiest ways to earn passive income with this app (and many others) is the referral system. When your friends and family sign up using your referral link, you’ll earn cashback.
Each gift card you purchase earns a certain amount of money back and can range anywhere from .50 cents to $5. So, if you’re keen on buying gift cards for people for holidays, birthdays, and other special events, Gift Card Granny is an excellent app to make money on your phone.
Now, Make That Money!
We’re living in a high-tech time, and making money has never been easier. People are finding unique, creative, and enjoyable side hustles by perusing through the apps on their phones, allowing for more time with family, friends and time for self-care.
Whether you’re looking to make money by shopping, walking, or delivering food, there is most definitely an “app for that.”
Author and televangelist Robert H. Schuller said, “Tough times never last, but tough people do.” The last year has been tough on everybody, especially if you’ve lost your income because of COVID-19. Hopefully, you’ve found something here that speaks to you and tells you that you can make money on your phone from home.
However, if you read through this and thought, “That’s great, but none of these are exactly what I’m looking for,” you can find more money-making apps on our website. Good luck in whatever you choose to do, and cheers to becoming the entrepreneur you’ve always wanted to be!
